The main thing I want to see in all bay area transit agencies is establishment or growth of continual improvement programs for service speed and reliability. Muni and SFMTA have been effective at this for years -- think of all the bus lanes in SF compared to 10 years ago.
What's an improvement that you'd like to see a Bay Area transit agency plan for, now that the success of measures RTM and H has ensured continued service?
It is now time for @bart.gov to pick up plans for platform screen doors (PSDs) as part of its CBTC signaling system replacement being installed now. It had put these plans on ice in 2019 due to compatibility challenges with the old trains and old signaling system, which are no longer in the way.

Fare related:
1. Regional fare capping
2. BayPass available to the public
3. Clipper START discount available to 400% of the poverty line like LA
4. Free local transit for youth and seniors like SFMTA
5. Replace Cubic with Cal-ITP

Two profound moments for me:
1. Kirschbaum calling in 2025 to tell me mayor made her permanent SFMTA director.
2. Regional Transit + Muni measures winning with better than expected margins

We couldn't have done the latter without the amazing ground game of transit advocates and volunteers. 🙏

ICE vehicles are parking in a San Francisco-owned garage, a possible violation of the city's sanctuary law.

SFMTA confirmed ICE use of its downtown parking garage, just blocks away from an immigration field office that was the epicenter of arrests last year.

The SFMTA said that about 600,000 trips were taken on Muni yesterday, the day of the Valkyries championship parade. It's the highest ridership recorded in a single day since the pandemic, the transportation agency said.

Ray Robinson grew up in the Bayview where 6 Muni drivers lived on his block. When those neighbors came home, they had “a proud walk” of someone serving their city.

So, when SFMTA was hiring operators in 2000, Robinson did not hesitate.

I got an email from SFMTA thanking us for our votes. I'm not entirely sure how they had my email address.

The San Francisco Rules Committee just accepted a surveillance report revealing over 10,000 red-light camera citations last year, but the program isn't making money—what's really going on?

Rules Committee accepts SFMTA surveillance report after discussion of red-light camera citation counts and costs
The committee voted to accept the SFMTA's 2026 biannual surveillance technology report after the agency reported 10,385 red-light camera citations in 2025 and the program manager said the program "is not a revenue generating program" and runs about $1.2 million per year to operate.

Transit agencies have been increasing fares. BART by 12%, AC Transit by 20%, SFMTA by 10%, etc.

But just like roads are not funded by tolls, transit is not funded by fares

A 30% increase in fares raises ~$100M across all bay area transit agencies, which is only 1/10th of the $1B needed
November 3, 2026 at 8:25 PM
I literally live here (SF) and have for the entire time Waymo and the other robots have operated here and them blocking transit is not only quite common, it is so common that CPUC and DMV started to track it.

Have you ever talked to SFMTA about it and have you read their reports/comments about it?
November 3, 2026 at 11:15 PM
Well, I think that we can do a better job of holding the agencies to account than whatever she will do over the years to come--I'd like to make a CalTrans version of this though: maxmautner.com/rtm-tracker/
Measure RTM Efficiency Tracker
Tracks whether Muni (SFMTA), BART, AC Transit, and Caltrain carry out the cost-saving commitments required by California SB 63. Every entry links to a primary source.
