It was definitely the right attitude while the rest of that group were trying to figure out how to make html full fledged sgml or conversely bring forward nelsonian hypertext. Parts of the www dev list are painful to read. But it's weird of all those folks he becomes The Guy.

But the fact that it was just HTML (no CSS even, much less Javascript) meant I went deep on markup, which meant SGML. And that led to me becoming an invited expert to the SGML working group at W3C which ultimately produced XML. And that ultimately led to me get headhunted by a US startup and moving.

SGML always allowed unpaired tags. XML added the restriction to make writing the parser a lot easier.
