Another element for the Shacktown related neon-flash art poster. Nobody on here will even understand this, but it looks cool.

Today’s arrival: Dell Four Color issue 367. Contains the famous story “A Christmas for Shacktown”. Wonderful Carl Barks cover and story. I have the Fantagraphics collection reprinting the story, but wanted to have a copy of the original 1952 publication.

I've seen that little girl on the left before. She's also depicted by Dorothea Lange, for the Farm Security Administration, in 1936. I believe she was at what was called the May(s) Ave. Camp in Oklahoma City

Pretty sure it's legally required to read "Bear Mountain" and "Shacktown" this time of year.

Metropolis/Gotham City are a classic northeastern column American story.

Rich Dutch merchants and English businessmen build their shining city on the hill.

Cross the bay, Irish and Eastern European immigrants are trucked in from their grimy shacktown to build that city.

A newly built store and trading center typical of a developing shacktown community near a large tomato cannery. Home to around 70 families, the community includes the Blackwood family, originally from Clay County, Arkansas, who built and operate the store. They are one of four related families
