[CANAAN] Shapash, Lamp of the Gods, Luminary of the Heavens, Eternal Lady. Based her off a couple of my cousins from Nazareth*.

June 19th - A Journey with Goddess

Shapash - Phoenician Goddess of the Sun.

The Solstice approaches, the sun blazes down, it's time to honour Shapash. She is the 'Torch of the Gods'. She is the ripening of the grapes, the long languid summer evenings, the sun at its highest height.

coming this weekend. shapash also, possibly, though she might be delayed by a week

Shapash is the Canaanite goddess of the sun, also known as "The Torch of the Gods." She also guides souls to the Underworld. According to ancient myths, the sun travels to the Underworld every night and emerges again every morning. #MythologyMonday

I don't show my sketches cause they tend to be messy, but she's one of my favorite OCs <3 I hope you like her as much as I do.
As a deity of the sun, she has had a lot of names through the history of the world, but most agree to call her Shapash.
(more info on Alt)

btw she's already dead

forgive me, "did a scribe actively fear making shapash lesbian + eblaite sun deity thoughts" draft... i must farm clout with 3k words orphic hymn c-lister articles

The mythological evidence for this is super scarce due to its fragmented condition, but I like to think that Shapash was "created" by El the same way El was supposed to have created the world, his chief wives Asherah and Rahmaya, and Mot. His first step to becoming a girl dad.

All three have different mothers, and each inherit her beauty, but all possess the yellow-gold eyes and frightening power of their father, Bull El. Anat's design is Canaanite-Palestinian, Shapash is northern Palestine and Lebanon + Canaan, Astarte has a lot of Egyptian influence mixed with Canaanite

seems it's not a mistransaltion - the hittite viceroy really called shapash "lady shimige" in a letter to niqmaddu of ugarit (not sure which one of the niqmaddus, though)

shapash appears in more ritual texts and esp. theophoric names than athirat and it's not even close, really weird to try to present the latter as more major

yamayuandadu.tumblr.com/post/8047608... New article! Looking for the elusive "female Shamash" in Mesopotamia and beyond, with a particular focus on Ugaritic Shapash (feat. that time she accidentally almost got a wife).
"Shamash is my mother"? In search of female solar deities in the "cuneiform world"
I promised that the triple feature I published last summer wouldn't be my last article dealing with changes of gender of Mesopotamian deities. At long last, it’s time for a new installment of this...

just dawned to me the pride month special cannot be the final part of the series, there's still the "female shamash" hypothesis (even taking Woods' doubts into account) + ugaritic shapash to cover in a further installment

i think shapash rebuking mot to basically force el's hand and make sure he won't flip flop on supporting baal again would be an interesting direction for her character in a retelling though
November 16, 2025 at 11:58 PM
this paper is good overall, but i don't really think this is true? she's the most major ally of baal through the yam section if the narrative (in which anat does next to nothing) and she has a solo myth (poorly preserved, but still). that's actually more than shapash or yarikh
November 18, 2025 at 11:58 PM
the proposal that in the baal cycle shapash acts on own accord as a voice of reason rather than only as a bearer of el's messages is interesting though i feel like this matches a modern penchant for more elaborate character dynamics more than what a bronze age audience would've expected

according to Smith, that Baal Cycle passage where someone says a god without a wife is unfit to rule might be Attar complaining about Yam and not Shapash rebuking Attar; will include this in the eventual critical blog post about Ayali-Darshan's Yam shipping discourse paper

checked tw*tter. saw someone pushing athirat = shapash because of that weird wikipedia push, and also witnessed praise(?) for my article which lamented the truth cannot be discussed due to "gender politics minions" (perhaps some nuance of original chinese is lost). needless to say i'm not going back

i keep thinking about the trilingual weidner god list going out of its way to avoid implying shasph x aya to the point they just dropped aya altogether. writing shapash as a deeply closeted lesbian who thinks her counterpart's wife is hot would be funny

Oh NO! You got it wrong. Night is caused on a flat earth by the edges rising up and covering over the land. Space Station astronauts have seen it, but are pants-on-fire-level liars!

I know. Shapash, goddess of the Sun, came to me in a vision and told me so!

Three thousand summers ago I arrive,
sailing from Phoenicia to land of Eydin,
and build stone ziggurat on castle rock
where I reign with spirit of Queen Shapash,
commissioned to maintain Lamp of the Gods
preserving eternal Flame of Shahar.

Roberts, in turn, only brings up sources which cover Shapash to explain three puzzling Shamash theophoric names; unless i missed something he doesn't cite any earlier author suggesting Shamash was at some point female
