In the mid-90s, we had an amateur radio data repeater near me like this article mentions for TCP/IP. The system here in CT worked really well.

I also have an Open spot 3 in the car. (A gift)
For use with my call phone I like the OS-3 better as my phone plays IP address games and sharkrf.link brings me to the device in two clicks of the browser.. With pi-stars I got to look up the IP and type it in.
But other things are easier and better.
