The Boring #Twenties

My grandfather told me about the Roaring '20s: driving 10 MPH was "speeding."

Bad as it is now, these are boom years between 2022 & 2029 #shmita busts.

I remember being 20-something, clueless to how wrong I am but eager to learn: memories #taper.

It's a seven year boom-bust cycle, Shemita, plus add one year every forty-nine to make an even fifty:

1929 The Big One
1930 The Little One
1937 Nazis invade
1944 Nazis win
1951 Commie Scare
1958 I like Ike
1965 Vietnam
1972 Gas crisis
1979 hostage crisis
1980 run on silver
1987 Black Monday Jr

The connection between the hebrew word gashmiut (גמישות) and rain has completely made me rethink what it is to be resilient.

One translation of gashmiut is resilient. But its root letters are gimel-shin-mem — geshem — rain.

Welcome to year 5 of the shmita cycle: gashmiut (גמישות)

I don’t have to write the dreaded High Holidays drash anymore, but I do have my own version — the Tishrei newsletter.

I just looked at last year’s and I want to copy/paste.

What do want a spiritual leader (and witch) to talk about right now?

The Mars/Shmita Year Hypothesis
Back in 2020, I came up with the idea that the Federal Reserve can set interest rates based on the movements of the planet Mars and then wrote a book explaining how it was feasible. In the earlier ver...

I think Jewish practices like the Shmita, 1 year fallowing of agricultural land, should be included

R' @sharonbrous.bsky.social at IKAR (@weareikar.bsky.social) last week.

On the religious law of shmita, the murders in DC, Oct 7, antisemitism, racism, the dignity of every human life, & the simple fact the horrors in Gaza are chillul Hashem, a desecration of God's name.

trying to square the circle of commandments that don’t make sense if you’ve ever actually done an agriculture (wtf shmita and bans on castration…) means retroactively saying well, i guess you just can’t, even if now we know they definitely did.

I just learned that the concept of "sabbatical" comes from the Bible, in which every seventh year the agricultural land is given a "rest" from production- a time of nurturing and renewal but not sowing or harvest. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shmita #academia

I wonder if the other laborers in the field kept pestering them to carry just one more pail, constantly, even though they’re on shmita

This might be minor but the real breaking point for me for some reason was when at some demonstration celebrating the eviction of a Bedouin town Ben Gvir planted a tree. But this was during Shmita.

if Eilat is sufficiently diaspora that it doesn't have to keep shmita it should darn well do the other diaspora traditions too

same goes for the Golan Heights for that matter

shmita year was in 5782 (added an xtra month to keep us semi aligned w/ solar calendar, happens every 7 years) so that means that holidays cycle later on gregorian calendars for a while bc we had an extra Adar a few years ago

This reminds me that I have an unpublished poem called “Shmita Year” (7 stanzas of 7 lines, + a single line—a Yovel/Jubilee of lines in total) that I haven’t sent out lately. I hope it finds a home someday—and I hope Israel does some thinking about Shmita before the next one in 2028 (and sooner!).
DEBT CANCELLATION EVERY SEVEN YEARS

LANDBACK EVERY FIFTY

(shoulda had that on the original but was rushing and blanked on the best stuff!)
I'd be very much down for a Jubilee every seven years...

last year was a shmita year, with a planned start date and an interminable extension past the 7 day mark that wasnt actually that fun to do in real life
