....& NEVER makes us feel dumb for asking questions.

However, this guy has been teaching woodworking--& using video too!--for longer than many of us have been alive.

Mr. Engler used to teach all of the instructional VHS videos for a company called "Shopsmith," in Ohio.

He also promoted the use of inexpensive, readily available tools.

For example, the Shopsmith is a woodworking unit that combines AT LEAST five different tools into one smaller, efficient unit, that was specifically designed for people with very little space to work.

Remember Shopsmith?

I got the shop just a bit cleaner, got the old lathe table torn down, got the Shopsmith set up, got the cutting board finished, & did some reorganizing. It's been a long day.

Nick Engler has done so much to make woodworking education accessible to everyone.

Here, he tells his story to another excellent woodworking YouTuber.

A preview: his dad was a physics professor, his grandmother was a poet, & his grandfather taught him woodworking!

Scenes from today’s shop set up… The weather in Tennessee is absolutely stunning this week. Nice to work outside!

I’m refurbishing a #shopsmith into a sanding station this week.

Well, Shopsmith announced yesterday that they're going out of business.

This is just wrong.

They're the last American-made tool company, & produce some incredibly high-quality stuff.

(NO, just bc I'll make more $$ as a seller of their parts & used equipment doesn't mean I'm happy about this.)

Tonight, I got a complete Shopsmith Mark V setup.

This is the 4th one I've bought.

This bad boy combined the following tools: Table saw, disc sander, lathe, drill press, & horizontal boring.

I'm home!
Yes, I just drove a total of 6 hours to get some things to sell, & some things to keep.

Most of it is still in the car, but I HAVE to show you yet another example of my complete inability to perceive scale on items I've not seen in person.

Shopsmith made a scroll saw.
Here it is:

...BOXES of stuff, whether they're free or $300. (That's the MOST I've paid for any Shopsmith unit.)

Since so many people find these Shopsmiths in their dad or uncle or grandfather's garage, they're usually missing pieces.

Just ONE of these lathe attachments costs $35 new, on the Shopsmith site:

Folx, I just talked to a BLIND woodworker. 😍
He's buying some Shopsmith parts from me, & has to send checks, instead of using payment apps. He wanted to talk to me before he sent the money.

He was so sweet, & I was thinking, I want to wrap you in flannel & protect you!

He was making spiral...

See this $1000 rotabin?

I got it for $50 from a garage sale.

It's full of Shopsmith parts now, because I have literally every part & most of the accessories for this tool.

I remember those late-night shopsmith ads from when I was a kid, and was very envious of anyone that owned such an amazing rig!

I freaking love the shopsmith. It's a brilliant tool for people w/ limited workshop space. And you can expand your woodworking skillset, almost indefinitely, & only use add-ons to the system!

A Shopsmith!
Dude is selling me a Mark V, w/a jig saw, jointer, Bandsaw, & power station, for $350. 😍😍😍

Here's me w/ a Mark V Greenie in my car.

Ok, I just found out that one of my Shopsmith motors has a 1 & 1/8's HP, & the other 3 are all 3/4 HP.

My rule of thumb: I try not to use a motor that's weaker than my garbage disposal. 😆

Check out these cool chart stickers I got for the Shopsmith. One of the biggest misses with this great machine is that the speed dial only has letters, not actual speeds.

Ok, forgive the UTTERLY self-serving question, but has anyone spoken to you about Our Lord & Savior, the Shopsmith?

I started woodworking 5 yrs ago. Since I was already a 2ndhand seller, I got some INCREDIBLE used tools. The Shopsmith is one of the last best beginner tools there is:

Holy shit, the dude who came to help our dump guy does flooring and wants the ShopSmith!

He’s going to help me clear out the rest of the crap in the garage in exchange for it.

I’m absolutely giddy at the way this day just keeps getting better and better.

Sharpening the blades to my #shopsmith jointer using a #veritas sharpening jig for a consistent angle. A proper sharpening station will happen once my wife’s picture frame is complete.
