Trans man or trans woman, for the same reason we don't use tallwoman or shortwoman. The conflation is a tool used by Gender Conservatives to imply a separate category rather than a sub-category

I'm assuming oxford also says tallwoman and shortwoman and blackwoman and gaywoman and youngwoman and goodwoman etc right? Because we're just fusing adjectives with nouns now right? ...

Precisely.
Side note: "trans" is just an adjective, it doesn't make the noun it's applied to a whole new word. You wouldn't say "shortwoman". Trans women aren't a separate category, they're just women with an adjective. ❤️

It is used as a point to say they'll never consider us as trans woman to be any kind of woman. It's dehumanizing. You'd never see someone say "funnywoman" or "shortwoman", it's always separated. Because "trans" is a descriptor, like how "cis" is a descriptor.

Of course, and this is correct, but also I am tempted to refer to myself as a shortwoman.

so it was a bit of a terf push to make it one word, "transwomen" to say they were a separate category from woman. There was an emphasis in the later 2010s in the trans community to make sure to keep a space because it's an adjective, the same way you wouldn't say blackwoman or shortwoman

It's unfortunately become a dogwhistle for anti-trans bigotry--linguistically, to run the two words together creates a kind of subcategory of person. Even if unintentional, it subtly dehumanizes (ex: like using "shortwoman" instead of "short woman", or "deadman" instead of "dead man")
