This requires assessing potential impacts on historic and cultural resources in consultation with the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP) and the D.C. State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO).

Like what are we doing here. We need SHPO Sec 106 reform IMO

I’m not especially concerned by this. ESA, SHPO, and a lack of harvest/mill capacity are all throttle controls. The bigger concern are discussions around liquidating our public lands.

Both the SHPO and PA's OSHA should be having a word - because what they're doing simply doesn't look safe.

this is a municipal building and the job is under SHPO review because they kicked in funding -- no way on earth this is acceptable

People ask this question a LOT, so I talked to some amazing folks and wrote a short explainer.

tl;dr - Leave it, take a pic, tell the SHPO. 🏺🧪
What should I do if I find a cool artifact in the US?
Spotting artifacts in the U.S. is common, but archaeologists want you to leave them in place.

I am (temporarily) part of a USFS archaeology office. Our region has an agreement with the the relevant State Historic Preservation Offices (SHPO) that gives us a fair amount of latitude for routine decision. Without that, every project we're involved in would have to go through SHPO. 1/

This is infuriating on many levels. Not least because some professionally excavated outhouses in Philadelphia have yielded great info. I hope the SHPO gets in touch with them to explain how they’re destroying history.

Give me Indiana Jones in a SHPO office fighting with a spineless fed who let the developer bulldoze unevaluated sites because the developer goes skiing with [insert elected official here]
Give me Indiana Jones doing US CRMArch and spending a week on call for a monitoring project budgeted for one day of work due to repeatedly encountering unmarked, unknown utilities.
Give me Indiana Jones working in developer funded archaeology and having to go down a five metre drop shaft in central London and being berated by construction workers

The situation at historic preservation offices is growing more dire. The nation is turning away from its 60-year commitment to preservation not through elected reps, but through OMB's intransigence.

Still can't get anyone to bite on my piece about this issue!

Lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of reinforced concrete. But more importantly than the actual design considerations the Section 106 and SHPO processes add time and money.

Once again I encounter my old foe... the inaccessibility of the California SHPO records lmao
Spoiler for my SAA talk: this is one of the many reasons archaeological research on the southern NWC is so underdeveloped/misunderstood
