Northern Shrikes are songbirds! Way back in 2012, we had a late staying bird one spring that decided to tune up with some songs. Kinda like a soft thrasher song. 🎵 I think I shot this with a PowerShot 30.

They forage insects, build nests, and defend their territory together as a cohesive social unit.

They’re the only bird that’s ever been observed stashing live prey like this.

Shrikes will impale food for later, but generally with the intent to kill it and show it off to the ladies. The flight feathers thing is messed up.
