Woe. Lore be upon ye.

I bring you the (XIV) Shugendo doc. If you remember the 2022 original, it has been almost entirely rewritten.
10k+ words across 20+ pages (and that's before I added pictures!) More than you ever needed.

Please enjoy! 🙏

A core practice of shugendo is seeking spiritual actualization through immersive ritual in nature, which includes travel into mountainous reaches punctuated by rugged living with little to no comfort.
It is a thing Hinako is intimately familiar with after years of practicing shugendo.

I wrote a book! "Eight Million Ways to Happiness: Wisdom for Inspiration and Healing from the Heart of Japan" drops in December. I traveled Japan, exploring our patchwork of spiritual traditions: Shinto, Buddhist, Shugendo, and more. Pre-order here. Thanks! www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/735293...

State Shinto butchered a beautiful Japanese syncretic tradition in which Shugendo, Buddhism, and Shinto conducted a religious conversation for more than a thousand years

Kannon‑in's founding year is unknown, but it served as a Shugendō temple in the Edo period, where ascetics practiced water austerities at a nearby waterfall. Shugendō, a mountain‑Buddhist tradition, was banned in the Meiji era, and the temple is now part of the Sōtō Zen school.
