And of course, the Too Bright Moon and Overgentle Breeze materializes as if out of the night itself, all disapproving magnificent face and shiny sword out. Xue Yang grins. He knew this. He made the trap. But as he attacks and responds, he feels weird. He lets none of it show, but he’s light headed and it’s like his feet always somehow land wrong. Looks like Xiao Xingchen didn’t notice. Yet. No way Xue Yang won’t be anything but the excellent warrior that self-righteous cultivator deserves. Wow. That move of his was so graceful. Dizziness occurs again. What is happening?

Jiang Cheng wakes, feeling like he just fell asleep. Great. He just LOVES when days begin like this. Movement against him… Oh. His mood improves considerably, before dropping when he remembers he has to go to work. Huaisang curls closer against him — as if he had not understood why Jiang Cheng awoke early — and whines without opening his eyes: “Call in siiiick!” “Can’t,” Jiang Cheng answers, sensitive as usual. “Then work from home!” “Huaisang… I’m a nurse.” “I know. Spring Wei Wuxian spent the day scrolling on educational websites. How do you survive the “terrible two” phase? Lan Zhan and him have been struggling forever. Every site advises asking grandparents for help. Summer “Uncle is not available.” “I WON’T ask the Jiangs. But…That’s not fair! That’s our anniversary week-end…” Fall “Cousin A-Ling says he’s got his paternal grandmother’s eyes and his maternal grandfather’s chin. “…no because Wen Qing will give me the medicine!” “Wei Wuxian,… No, she…” “Shh! He’s coming! HEY! JIN ZIXUN! Have a drink!” Zixun snickers unpleasantly: “You think I’m stupid?” “Yeah of course, but not the point,” he mutters under his breath. “Oh, you don’t trust me, right? Look: I’ll drink first. I’m making peace with you.” And he gulps a mouthful of his mixture. It’s actually quite tasty. Jin Zixun takes it from his hands and pushes him roughly out of his way to drink. “Lan Zhan is avenged,” Wei Ying whispers. “Wei Ying… Jie’s out of this medicine…” Meng Yao runs in the crowded streets. The herbalist said he’s got no more of this medicine, but his mom needs it! He’s really scared this time. She was so… No. He won’t think this way. In front of a temple, he hears her voice in his head: “Son: always take time for goddess Guanyin.” But he has no time! When he arrives home, the faces of the other ladies tell him everything he has to know — and dreaded to. He should have stopped at the Guanyin temple. Now it’s too late to say he’ll never make that mistake again.

I thought it would be interesting to try this prompt in particular for a story set in Ancient China. 🤭
“You can do it, Wen Qing, you’re the best doctor…” She interrupts him: “Don’t flatter me! I can’t. I’d need to see where to cut not to damage anything. And he’s already weakened.” Silence weighs between them. “If there was a machine that could show me…” “Oh,” Wei Ying blurts out “…not a machine but… maybe…” He’s absentmindedly stroking the side of his nose. *** And of course he did it. The talisman is incredible: Wen Qing can clearly see the bones and even the organs, slightly lighter, as if Jiang Cheng’s skin had been removed. Surgery will be a success.

“Food poisoning.” “Shut up Lanlan! It’s not!” Song Lan manages to make impassivity look like dismay. Xue Yang wants to growl at him but his tummy is not facilitating any aggressive reaction. Being folded in two is not very threatening. “I told you that this tanghulu stall wasn’t safe.” I can eat anything I want!” Xue Yang yells what sounds more like a pitiful whine. “Always have!” And after a beat, not at all to let the cramp pass: “T’was the only one with strawberry’s.” Song Lan nods: “Out of season, yes.” He wants to rip his heart out. Tomorrow.

He turns to his brother, trying in vain to wake him up. “I can take you to my sister, she’s a doctor,” Wen Ning whispers. Wei Wuxian huffs a sour chuckle: “We can’t afford a Wen Doctor. I’d rather we wouldn’t die and leave shi-Jie as the last Jiang.” Wen Ning frowns and Wei Wuxian wonders for a minute if he angered him. “N-No,” the boy stutters. “She’ll help you. I promise.”

Which is your favorite?
Wei Ying is at a Cultivation symposium with Uncle and Xichen. Yanli and Zixuan are exhausted with the new baby. Wangji thought it would be okay to take care of A-Yuan alone even with a cold. This is the hardest day of his LIFE. (and now he’s becoming as dramatic as his husband.) Morning: finger painting (cleaning ensues). Lunch with leftovers (Wangji is not proud.) Afternoon… “What…?” He wakes up. “For you a-die: hot chocolate with cinnamon and honey.” … A-Yuan even put it in his own favorite bunny mug!!! Lan Zhan fights the tears. They’ve got the best boy! That was his turn, and to Hell if he gives his place! But… Jiang Cheng is slowly regretting having A-Ling home while sick. “Why do you tell the story like that? You talk funny.” Jiang Cheng sighs: “I’m sick, A-Ling.” “Then don’t! That’s weird.” “What do you want to do?” “Swimming! Sword forms! Night hunts!” Jiang Cheng is exhausted just listening to that program. And four is too young for Nighthunting anyway. A-Ling pouts very hard: “YOU’RE NO FUN!” “LOOK! Despite work I’m still with you, right?!” When he wakes up on his desk, A-Ling has helped him with work.

“It’s a feral cat.” Xiao Xingchen snorts weakly: “Stop it Zichen. It’s a man and he’s hurt.” The ‘feral cat’ tried to hit him and has refused they call the police or a hospital. He’s crouched in their inner courtyard. Xingchen has managed to give him a blanket but he can’t get him to come into their home or tend to his wounds. He goes back to him and sits. When he pulls out a candy the man snaps his head to him. “Want one?” “No…” With eager eyes. Xingchen throws him a bunch of candies. He catches them all.

“YOU DON’T GET IT HUAISANG!” A-Cheng yells. Then, in front of his widened eyes, he deflates abruptly. “I have to. My brother is… I have to help him. But it’s so difficult. Then there’s Yanli: I have to support her with A-Ling.” “Zixuan…?” “What do you think?” he snaps. “He needs rest too. And my mother calls me everyday to complain about my lack of lovelife, then rants about my father… They need my aid..” “Oh. Jiang Cheng. You… You have caregiver burn out!” “Puh! No I don’t.” Huaisang smirks. “I can help. But with only one of your problems.”

“Why’s there no firecamp yet?” Sizhui’s soothing hand lands on Jingyi’s arm before he starts yelling at A-Ling. “Did you forget to pack the blanket?” the Jin boy continues. “A-LING!” This time Sizhui’s serenity isn't enough. “Jingyi…” he tries. The boys are almost coming to blows with Jingyi reminding A-Ling of everything he didn’t manage. Then The Princess burst into tears!! “You’re so mean! I’ll tell Jiujiu!” That’s… odd, even for him. Sizhui exchanges a glance with Zizhen and, while Jingyi is crimson with “the nerve of that guy”, they both put fingers on the boy’s meridians. Yup. The flu.

Nie Mingjue is dead. At least he feels like it. And he should be. He doesn’t remember much save the pain (now coming back) exploding in every limb while he was fighting… “A-Yao…” “He’s right there,” Xichen answers. His eyes snap open and anger rises. “Er ge stopped me. I’m so sorry Da ge.” Mingjue realizes Xichen is playing the guqin and doesn’t stop. “When…?” his throat rasps. After a silence, Xichen answers: “Mingjue… A month ago. He’s been convicted but he wanted to see you.” This sentence stirs up way too many contradictory emotions. “Please. Stay. Both of you.”

Xue Yang feels awful. Like he’s been chewed by pandas and spitted out. He opens sore eyes and gasps in shock: XIAO XINGCHEN! Right there! The man approaches his hand, which — with tremendous effort — Xue Yang bats away. “Don’t be afraid, it’s infected—” the guy whispers. “Who’s afraid?!” Xue Yang hisses, but it’s harder to dismiss infection and he can do nothing but watch the guy bandage him. Everything swings and turns way too much to risk moving. Better take advantage of his blindness and regain strength to strike him later. Fucking fever that makes Xue Yang finds him sweet.

Wei Wuxian turns on his side. The fever is receding but he’s exhausted. A soft sound makes him open his eyes in surprise. What…? A hop next to the low bed reveals the culprit: “Heeey Bunnyyy,” Wei Wuxian’s voice trails. His hand slips out of the blanket and falls to the floor. No more energy to lift it to tap on the ground to lure the rabbit forward. Too bad. He closes his eyes. He’ll never get to pet them like Lan Zhan. His eyes open again when something wet touches his fingers. He smiles. Lan Zhan won’t believe it.

Good: Jiang Cheng’s roommates are not there. He’ll be able to work. He’s not that happy that Huaisang isn’t there, but at least he won’t be… distracting. Turns out it’s not a good idea to be roommates with your crush. Or your brother. But for other reasons. Oh, of course they had to leave their mess! And what with that pile of blankets on the couch? It moves! Jiang Cheng jumps backward, startled. “Huaisang?” A pitiful whine answers. All he can see among the covers are puffy eyes and a (very cute) red nose. “Let me take care of you.”

Lan Xichen hesitates. Then he enters. The curtains are pulled. Pale laboured breathed Meng Yao lies on his bed in his clothes. Lan Xichen shakes his head and tuts silently. When he approaches, A-Yao opens his eyes in a panic. “Er-ge! Oh no, I have to—” “—stay in bed, you’re sick.” “But Sect leader Yao will—” “He’s already here.” “Then I need—” “—to stay in bed.” Xichen’s hand is on A’Yao’s chest. The young man’s cheeks are flushed. Xichen is not sure it’s from the fever. “But—” Xichen climbs next to him. “What are you doing?” “Keeping you in bed.”

Su She shakes his head, then stops, because. He closes his eyes firmly. Not again, he thinks pitifully. A soft hand lands lightly on his arm. “Breathe slowly. Relax.” This is different, Su She realizes. Jin Guangyao is nothing like Hanguang Jun.

06 Doctor visit

*Knock knock* Wen Qing gets to the door and opens cautiously. The woman on the threshold seems a bit out of breath, her cheeks are a slight pink and a thin layer of sweat covers her skin. A fresh shallow cut on her cheekbone drips a little. As Wen Qing doesn’t prompt her to talk, she blushes and bows: “Lady Wen… Daifu. Nie Gongzi urged me to see you. He tripped and wounded me. I know it’s nothing but he says it’s a potent weapon…” Nie gongzi probably knows Luo Qingyang is a powerful enough cultivator to manage. Mn. Cute.
