The size of Sillosuchus' holotype has been drastically underestimated

(and well... lets not talk about the isolated specimens)

"fasolasuchus ain't got shit on me", says sillosuchus, a herbivorous, bipedal poposauroid from the carnian of argentina. while the holotype is already larger than related shuvosaurids, a referred specimen suggests a maximum size of at least 11 metres

I didn't realize until recently that this one mounted Saurosuchus skeleton I've known from the Internet for a long time is actually chasing a large Sillosuchus.

This is NOT a dinosaur. Sillosuchus was a bipedal, beaked, herbivorous distant relative of crocodilians which lived during the Late Triassic in South America

happy #fossilfriday! this is sillosuchus, a shuvosaurid from late triassic argentina. the shuvosaurids were beaked, bipedal herbivores belonging to the superfamily poposauroidea, which also included the carnivorous dromaeosaur lookalike poposaurus

having read the paper where nesbitt refers the giant hip and hindlimb material to sillosuchus, it's become clear that the material shares autapomorphic features with the holotype, which likely represents a juvenile :3 whereas the ~9-10m long specimen represents an adult sillosuchus
the identity of the large shuvosaurid remains found in the ischigualasto formation is somewhat contentious, due to the drastic difference in size between them and the holotype of sillosuchus, meaning that they may belong to a different species or genus

update: a new paper analysing the osteohistology of non-crocodylomorph pseudosuchians from triassic south america indicates that the holotype specimen of sillosuchus longicervix was mature or near-mature when it died, opening the possibility that the giant material belongs to a separate taxon

Sillosuchus is possibly the only other prey item, aside from Ischigualastia, that lived with Saurosuchus that was larger than the predator.

Sillosuchus and Megacerops are my current faves. Would love a documentary on convergence evolution

Been working on some more Netherling depictions of prehistoric animals

List : Lystrosaurus, Livayatan, Lisowicia, and Sillosuchus

yeah sillosuchus is afaik still the largest shuvosaurid currently described; the giant referred material needs to be re-evaluated

Neither is the Sillosuchus

as far as i know, this means that sillosuchus is currently the only shuvosaurid to have more than one growth stage represented in the fossil record; it would be really interesting to see a study on shuvosaurid ontogeny based on this material 👀

with giants like sillosuchus around, it makes sense why contemporary early sauropodomorphs in south america - like chromogisaurus - were restricted to such small sizes in the carnian

Do questions about Triassic Archosaurs count? Like any thoughts on the pre-dino giants. Fasolasuchus, Sillosuchus, or the giant Phytosaur Smilosuchus? I feel like stuff like this gets overshadowed by true dinosaurs so would be fun to talk about.

From last Friday's paleosteam
Sillosuchus foraging on horsetails.
Suchomimus stares at you in curiosity.
Shuvosaurus running across fallen logs.
Fukuivenator yawing.

sillosuchus' size - namely its height and long neck - would also have allowed it to take advantage of higher-growing vegetation than the dicynodonts with which it lived, including the absolute unit (technical term) ischigualastia

I always forget how much larger that referred sillosuchus specimen is, really hope we get more material of a big shuvosaurid some day
