In 2014, Similipal had only four Bengal tigers, including a pseudo-melanistic male. The small population increased inbreeding, prompting genetic studies and conservation strategies focused on preserving diversity, habitat connectivity, and species survival.

There are also a very small number of 'black' tigers in one place in India, the Similipal Tiger Reserve, unfortunately they also seem to be the result of inbreeding.
