The garlic fried rice is easy! The longanisa and red weenies came from the Filipino market (Tender Juicy is my preferred brand of the latter), and eggs is eggs. 😝
Garlic Fried Rice
Garlic Fried Rice or Sinangag is steamed rice fried with lots of garlic. This is a favorite side in the Philippines and most of Asia since rice is considered as the staple food.

My lola never followed a recipe. Garlic. Lard. Day-old rice. Calamansi.

She called it sinangag.

Thirty years later, Italy went viral for the exact same formula and called it aglio e olio.

Sinangag had a passport the whole time. We just never stamped it. 🧵

I used to be embarrassed bringing sinangag to work. Leftover rice felt like sad-desk-lunch energy. Then I watched my lola make it at 6am on a Sunday — same four things, same pan, every week. She made it look like a choice. $0.89/serving. It was a choice.

$0.94/serving. Eggs aren't a breakfast protein — that's just a rule someone made up.

Sinangag-style: day-old rice + 2 eggs + garlic + butter + soy sauce. 5 ingredients. 12 mins.

Cold rice fries. Warm rice steams. Day-old isn't a compromise — it's the technique.

What food 'rule' did you grow up...

"Bibimbap" = mixed rice.
Sinangag = garlic fried rice.

Both born the same way: someone refused to waste yesterday's rice.

I didn't learn a new cuisine. I found the Korean name for what my lola already knew.

We're all just comparing notes.

I'll start: shakshuka = eggs in purgatory. Your turn?

Your lola calling it Tuesday—that's the whole point right there. Sinangag is proof the best recipes don't need fancy. One pan, rice, heat, egg if lucky. She wasn't being trendy or minimal, she was being smart. That's what everyone's rediscovering: simpler recipes actually work best.

Chinese youth calling stripped-down meals 'human food' like it's new.

My lola called it Tuesday.

Sinangag. Last night's rice. One pan. Eggs if you had them. 7 minutes.

Every culture has a version. Filipino kitchens just never needed a name for it.

What's yours? Follow for the cost breakdown.

Used my day off to make a traditional Filipino breakfast (sinangag/garlic rice, spicy longanisa/sausage, & egg) 😋 🇵🇭

I broke the egg yolk while flipping it so I guess it's a...semi scrambled egg lol.
