'Massive sinkholes open up across Turkey…

Turkey’s central Anatolian plateau is one of the country’s most important ag regions, producing wheat, maize, sugar beet and other crops. Yet beneath its cultivated fields, the ground is becoming increasingly unstable.'

There's a road in south Johannesburg that has been completely abandoned to illegal mining. James Oatway's drone photos show just how nuts it is.

But while zama zamas are being blamed for everything from sinkholes to mass shootings, experts say they are being scapegoated for much of that.

Maybe Nigel Farage can plant some sparkling wine vineyards inside these sinkholes because climate change makes sparkling wine so much better.

You be super careful. Those dry washes have been filling quickly lately. Keep an eye out for sinkholes, too. And rockslides. Idk, could you just go inside?

I wonder if we named all the potholes/sinkholes of St. Louis, if that might get them addressed faster

There are 2 electrical substations around the sinkholes in Wink, TX that are uncomfortably close. Sink holes might be today’s quicksand.

'The nation’s disaster and emergency management authority (AFAD) has recently documented 684 sinkholes across Konya, Karaman and Aksaray in Turkey’s agricultural heartlands.

...intensive groundwater extraction for agriculture can also increase the risk of collapse.'

'Large sinkholes, some tens of metres wide and deep, have appeared across the Konya basin, swallowing farmland, and threatening nearby roads and settlements.

These collapses can occur suddenly, sometimes in fields that have been cultivated for generations. Around 20 are opening up every year'

I’m sadly familiar with such places, complete sinkholes sucking up everything that gives life light and meaning.

'Known locally as obruks, sinkholes are not a new geological phenomenon. …but they have become far more frequent over recent decades.

...Their recent instability, however, is occurring within a groundwater system profoundly altered by human activity and increasingly exposed to drought.'

'…groundwater also puts stress on u'ground geological formations. The Konya basin contains extensive carbonate rocks, incl limestone. Over long periods, groundwater circulating through fractures dissolves minerals & enlarges openings… Sinkholes form when material above such voids becomes unstable.'
