#sketchbookdiary - writing the acknowledgments for a novel, aka there are so many people and it’s not organized and inevitably I will leave someone out.

Filling up the last page of my first #sketchbookdiary. Should I do a flip through or something?

#sketchbookdiary progress: here’s where I am in learning to quick, highly abstracted sketches of people.

That turns out to be (artists out there will be shocked!) REALLY HARD.

Does anyone have resources to recommend?

Another #sketchbookdiary page. Our Muskoka retreat included two American writers (and me, but after 25 years of dual citizenship I assimilated-ish) and it’s always fun to make someone try ketchup potato chips for the first time.

#sketchbookdiary May 2: I tried raw oysters for the first time.

I wasn’t expecting to like them. They look like snot with organs. But, a secret for an interesting life is to say yes to weird stuff that lands in your lap, like eating the oysters that were harvested literally across the street.

#sketchbookdiary - I have been hanging on for this! On my birthday I caught airplanes. It flew to Portland, and the next day caught a bus to the Washington coast, to Willapa Bay and the Long Beach Penisula, where the Columbia meets the Pacific.

#sketchbookdiary recap of WITCHWARD BOUND launch day on September 1st.

Not half a patch on the wonderful illos by Kelly Murphy — Butter looks like one of those weird medieval manuscript cats. But I do like the grape juice sea and the pea green boat.

In my #sketchbookdiary recently, the poem that comes to my heart this time of year: “Instructions on Not Giving Up,” by Ada Limon.

More than the fuchsia funnels breaking out
of the crabapple tree, more than the neighbor’s
almost obscene display of cherry limbs shoving

Text reads: I have used a fountain pen for years, but I still cannot refill a pen from an ink bottle without staining my hands.

A page from my #sketchbookdiary from back in December, before the great flu. I am still working on a visual shorthand to let me draw the people in my life — or people, generally — in a way that captures something interesting about them. I am getting a little closer.

#sketchbookdiary with some home-based stuff redacted. To get my head into the space where I am, I walked down to #WillapaBay bay and sat a long time by the water. I sketched. Better.

#sketchbookdiary text reads: we watched a documentary about fossilized footprints at White Sands National Park in New Mexico. Trying to date the peopling of North America.

A rushing woman pauses, resettles the child on her hip. Tiny footprints appear beside hers.

My #sketchbookdiary is mostly about the mundanities of my life. It’s meant to be analog, grounded, imperfect — the opposite of AI — things that I have seen with my own eyes.

But sometimes the news is the only thing that seems possible to draw.

We build sanctuaries from the wreckage—
a cathedral of bone, grief feathered with purpose.
In the wake of ruin, love sharpens into ritual.
