Text: For decades, dark-sky advocates and municipal lighting managers were often viewed as opposing sides. One side advocated for nighttime preservation and the other for urban safety. Decision makers came to believe that a city could have one or the other, but not both. The experiences of Tucson, Vienna, and Metz prove that this binary choice is false. You could call it skyglow, you could simply say "clouds illuminated at night by city lights", or "why did the camera make it seem lighter than it is?", or even "did that bastid tweak that image?". Anyway, a too-quiet night on the porch. So dry. No insects last night or tonight.

The clouds are fluffy, irregular (like me) and cover most of the sky to the right. The foreground is nearly completely dark, although along the left side some of the native shrubs in the yard (sand sage) are faintly lit by light from the kitchen nearby. Somewhere, a pack rat is planning their next attack on my truck engine, having eaten through spark plug wires four different times now. Nothing discourages them. Houses in the image have various yellowish lighting, with spots of more colorful light. I am hoping when Mr. or Mrs. Packrat seeks the bait in the electric trap, they, too, will provide a brief moment of colorful light. It costs $70-$100 to replace the spark plug wires, each time.
