Then Goodman retired in 1972. Stan immediately greenlighted a full magazine line.

Savage Tales was revived. Four monster titles were launched. And 2 humor mags. Marvel was going after Warren & Skywald.

Warren, with superior content & established distribution, stood firm. Skywald folded at once.

An often ignored part of the Bronze Age comics wars was Marvel's magazine line. Marvel took on Warren & Skywald.

By 1974, there were 11 titles. Planet of the Apes, Rampaging Hulk, Deadly Hands of Kung-fu, and, of course, Savage Sword of Conan.

Some gems there, & a lot of crap.

Sundance Kid no. 2 (July 1971) cover by Dick Ayers and John Tartaglione. The publisher, Skywald, had a bit more success with black & white magazine-sized comics like Nightmare and Psycho, but put out a handful of color titles which lasted a few issues each. #WesternComicsMonth
