War is peace.

Freedom is slavery.

Ignorance is strength.

To quote Eric Williams in his work Capatalism and Slavery: "British historians write almost as if Britain had introduced Negro slavery solely for the satisfaction of abolishing it.”

Former slave owners and their descendants have been paid somewhere in the region of £17bn in today's money as "compensation" for the Abolition of Slavery Act 1833. The British taxpayer paid of the final "debt" in 2015. You can find out more through UCL'S groundbreaking Legacies of Slavery project.

Eric Williams: “British historians write almost as if Britain had introduced Negro slavery solely for the satisfaction of abolishing it.”
The British conservative take on slavery seems to be great pride that their ancestors abolished the slave trade but no guilt that their ancestors created a slave trade requiring abolition. Guilt dies with the sinner but pride is inherited. Have I got that right?

Suella Braverman says slavery abhorrent - but the British people of the 21st century aren't responsible for the wrongs of the past.

"Let’s also not forget the role Britain played in ending slavery" then seem illogical: the British people of the 21st century can't be responsible for that either!

Exactly that point.

The "History Reclaimed" leaning right constantly boasts that Britain ended slavery... while simultaneously insisting that modern Britain has no responsibility for the past.

Which is it, Suella?

You should have apologized for slavery without being asked, you fascist cunt

I do not believe that I, personally, am guilty of slavery. But I am part of collective polities that were, and that should act on that guilt!

Eric Williams always relevant: "British historians wrote almost as if Britain had introduced Negro slavery solely for the satisfaction of abolishing it"
There are cogent arguments for and against reparations, but "what about the African gang masters?" Is truly the lowest of the low here.

A reminder that the electoral college was a compromise for the slave state to get better representation for their 3/5 humans (slaves). When slavery was abolished, so should have the electoral college.

BBC, at least get basic facts right on reparations: the slave “trade” is not the same thing as inter-generational plantation slavery. Examine CARICOM’s demands rather than accepting what anti-reparative activists tell you they are.

10. Mississippi didn’t ratify the Thirteenth Amendment, abolishing slavery, until 1995. Then it actually forgot to file the required paperwork to officially abolish slavery for another 18 years, and only did so in 2013! (Chapter 3)

Personal remorse and words from the Prime Minister for what the UN called ‘the gravest crime against humanity’ is not nearly enough. The United Kingdom played a major role in the Transatlantic Trafficking of Enslaved Africans...

The fact Britain becomes apoplectic at the idea of even apologising for our role in slavery is itself proof we have not come to terms with the loss of an empire
