Remember when turning on a TV meant… just turning it on? Now it’s a full-blown negotiation. Boot up, connect to WiFi, no I don’t want to update, yes I still use HDMI, please just let me watch something. SmartTVs turned a simple joy into a UX nightmare.

My 4-year old niece thinks the very concept of a movie theater is the coolest thing in the world. To a child who has mostly experienced movies through SmartTVs and tablets, movie theaters sound like something made for royalty.

I discovered this recently, too. To the extent that Gen Zers and younger Millennials even own TV sets, they’re almost always SmartTVs with internet capability but no actual tuner, so the idea of over the air TV is meaningless to them.
Related: This week I discovered that there's a whole generation that doesn't know what "network TV" is. They call it all "cable" because that's what linear TV is on, as opposed to streaming. So maybe the distinction has become meaningless.
I know nobody thinks about network TV much these days, but ABC announcing a 22-hour fall prime-time schedule with only four and a half hours of scripted comedies and dramas feels like a white flag. They just don't know how to do this anymore.

Trying to explain to my older relative that SmartTVs aren't actually smart and that yes, after a while apps on them just stop working. They look like capitalist society has just backstabbed them at the idea of products and apps being made to be obsolete barely 10 years later.
