Good morning from Kyiv, Ukraine, where the dawn is blackened by smoke from fires caused by the ongoing Russian airstrike on the city.
*Usually I see the smokescape from the opposite side of Kyiv. Today it's the Left Bank burning.

The death toll is now 3; at least 12 people are wounded.

Saddened – and steeled – that amid freakish May heat, winds and apocalyptic smokescape, spring migration is still doing its thing here in Manitoba. There is no other option for these birds. This palm warbler was lit prettily by last night’s red orb of a sun over Lake Manitoba. #birds

Returned from a week of hiking and exploring in the Rockies, based in Golden, B.C. I’m incredibly grateful to have experienced clean air on parts or all of five of seven days – and having also witnessed the apocalyptic smokescape on the other days, I feel a pit in my gut about this area’s future.
