It may not have the bright colours, bordering on gaudy, of the male, but the pattern and feather structure of a female pheasant are just as captivating

Phasianus colchicus rotundus

Surely a clever evolutionary trick: eat so much you can’t fly then no-one can shoot you out of the sky!

Two days of pure magic in the Dales! Yesterday, the rush of Stainforth Falls, where the River Ribble tumbles over ancient limestone ledges. Today, we’re off to Snaizeholme, to enjoy the gentle wonder of red squirrels. The best of days, wrapped in nature’s embrace. #YorkshireDales #NatureEscape

Red squirrels at Snaizeholme in the Yorkshire dales. To sit and watch them scurrying around and chase each other up and around the trees is such a pleasure. Sit with a few nuts in your hand and they will come and gently take them from you.

Happy Red Squirrel Day! The Dales is home to a handful of red squirrel colonies, primarily in the north western areas of the National Park, with a good chance to seeing them at Snaizeholme - not far from Hawes.
