There’s no need for politicians who can betray their electorate and who are elected for the short term. What people vote for when they vote for individuals does not represent what they think (strategic voting, voting for the least worst candidate, etc.). It would be better to vote directly for ideas. Referendums can be used for short-, medium- and long-term measures. It can change systems. To give more responsibility to the citizens thanks to referendums, a good education is needed and citizens should know how to protect themselves against fake news. This requires an independent and trustworthy press. Referendums bring people together around their common ideas, whereas candidates divide them.
