I have tried and failed to make a similar argument for years. Every NSF proposal I submit about SoftEng for robotics gets destroyed because it's understood as mere development. It's much more, making the right tools yields thinking frameworks that become productivity and creativity amplifiers.

Software Engineering.
Depends what you mean by "take". My old job is already taken in the sense that it has evolved. I'm doing my best to adapt.
Eventually, AI will be better at softeng in every way than all humans, and that will be a very different world that's hard for me to comprehend.

Sure, there are dedicated conferences for AI/ML. But if you go to, say, a software engineering conference, these days they are full of papers of the flavor "AI for SoftEng" and "SoftEng for AI".

Personally I have just harvested a ton of gotcha complexity questions just to try and land this truth nuke in the softeng world. The field is extremely hard to work with and often the insights you think you have are wrong until verified.

fell out of uni into a tech job, fell out of tech to study architecture, kept reaching for code to fix the terrible tooling, lucked into an internship at an engineering place that didn't have any space for an architect/draughtperson, but did have a newish softeng team... and i fell back into tech

It made me realise that IT/DevOps/SoftEng speak an entirely different dialect from normies and translation between the two is a deeply undervalued skill.

Haven't read about MENSA and NetHack, but Jan Krajíček single-handedly solved NetHack in 2015 pre-llm, pure softeng. dspace.cuni.cz/handle/20.50... The approach was quick debugging of (Clojure) rules in multiple NetHack sessions interactively.

Not sure what you are saying here but tbh even in physics and chemistry by the time you get into the details there’s frequently an element of randomness messing things up.

People talk about tech being brutal for layoffs and, yeah. I've never been fired from, or quit, any one of my softeng jobs. They were all unilateral layoffs.
Sometimes I would survive a wave or two, watch a bunch of coworkers depart with knowledge I needed in their head.
