"The Bureau of Labor Statistics has reported that gambling was the second-highest service-sector industry for GDP growth between 2019 and 2024, behind only software publishing."

Jesus Christ.
Very annoyed at the people who decided to open the floodgates to online sports betting, it is absolutely a scourge. Great piece from Gabrielle Gurley on people spending hours a day on these predatory apps.
The Scourge of Online Sports Betting - The American Prospect
States and leagues must face up to the damage from app-based gambling for the next generation of bettors, most of them young men.

that a former DOGE software engineer may have walked out the door with access to two highly sensitive SSA databases and intended to bring that information to a private sector employer.

The mission of DOGE isn’t to “cut unnecessary spending”!!! It’s to gut the liberal state and attack Labor and racialized and gendered sectors of the public sector! Musk wants every federal worker pissing in basic bottles and using his chatbot software no one cares about “waste” you greasy idiot!

dude I hope something bad happens to the software sector

Generally the revealed preference of the Trump admin has been that the US should be a petro state with a software sector and maybe some low value added manufacturing somewhere.

Ukraine’s defense sector expanded to more than 900 companies employing over 300,000 people.
They produce drones, EW systems, artillery, robotics and software that reshaped the battlefield while prioritizing protection of soldiers and civilians. #Ukraine

Wave Two the Public Recruiting and Expansion

As the organization expanded, the National Design Studio began publicly recruiting software engineers, designers, product managers, accessibility specialists, creative directors, and operations staff from the private sector.

people are like AI's gonna be a 5 trillion dollar market, but if you replaced literally the entire software sector that's only like 990 billion, so like (??)

This is a level of concentration risk unseen in any other software category we track. The companies in the top 1% skew heavily toward the tech sector and AI products and services.
September 2, 2026 at 6:10 PM
If AI is radically reducing the cost of software development, why are we seeing no decrease in vendors’ bids for government software projects? In fact, they’ve increased in the past few years. Private sector folks, are you seeing price drops?
August 16, 2025 at 1:16 PM
I don’t get the sense we are seeing a lot of rigorous work driving the AI ship. Not with people in the sector saying things like, most jobs are more like software engineering than the people realize.

i see you’re all discovering how broken public-sector software procurement is.

reading about private sector polling software suites as an academic is like doing subsistence farming while looking up at jets whizzing above you, except somehow you are trying to do things that are somehow *more* complicated than them in some ways
January 6, 2026 at 12:35 AM
The dumbest thing about all this is that smarter tech people actually do have relatively cogent perspectives on the public sector, because any piece of software that lots of people use is inherently a socio-technical system, and they get that. But these are not the smart tech people.

IBM warns AI boom is squeezing software budgets; shares slump in sector rout
IBM said it had "faltered" in keeping pace with a shift in corporate spending toward data-center infrastructure from software and forecast second-quarter revenue below estimates, the clearest sign yet of AI's growing toll on ‌the sector.
