thing the modern trans rights movement lacks:

- chinese siege engineers
- sogdian horses
- the riches of samarqand
- the support of the kurultai council
show me a trans woman who's not a gamer and I'll show you the daughter of heaven who will unify the tribes of the cities and tear down the walls of her enemies

Sometimes you find the darndest things when you go a-researching. Like a 580+ pp dictionary of Sogdian names.

Which, if you're looking for a source on Sogdian names--which I happened to have been--is great!

I can't imagine that getting published now, though.

Sheridan, Daniel . 2026. Sogdian Christians. Networks, Books, Homilies, and Medicine. Turnhout: Brepols. After centuries of obscurity, the Sogdian people have once again been recognized as the premier long-distance traders of the famed Eurasian trade routes of late antique and early medieval Eurasia, popularly referred to as the “Silk Roads.” Similarily, a previous Christian association with Sogdians and their language had also been all but forgotten until the archeological finds at the turn of the twentieth century.

basically he thought everything since the Xianbei Wei (4-6th century) had been “barbarian” 胡服.
apart from Zhu Xi or contemporary Hanfu activists, no one actually cared. one of the most popular styles in Tang, worn by both men and women, was Sogdian.

The Sogdian & Bactrian world 400-800 CE was a fascinating cosmopolitan & multicultural society of art loving rich merchants & cultured elite dealing in high politics & intrigue, reminiscent of Renaissance Italy. Yet a sum total of 10 scholars or less work on it! That is truly heartbreaking.

Updated #map of where the #Sogdian script was used with the addition of the Silk Road as many Sogdian merchants have settled across it. There must have been many Sogdians venturing outside of Sogdiana.

Mongolian has some wild Eurasian etymologies! 🥰 My favourite one is nom ᠨᠣᠮ ('book'), from Greek νόμος, via Sogdian and Old Uyghur. The semantic shift 'custom, law' > 'scripture' > 'book' is lovely.
Btw nomos also has a Syriac > Arabic result, nāmōsā ܢܳܡܘܿܣܳܐ > nāmūs ناموس 😀
