Twenty years after launch, Japan's Hinode solar observatory still works. A three-year mission now planned to run until 2033. Hinode maps the Sun's magnetic fields. It lifted off from Uchinoura on September 22, 2006, on the seventh and final M-V rocket ever flown.

The Sun's Corona Defies Physics

The Sun's visible surface is 5,500°C, but its outer corona reaches millions of degrees. Like air getting hotter away from a fire, this paradox has puzzled scientists for decades. NASA's Parker Solar Probe is investigating.
