i have had a very shitty no-good horrible week and it's only wednesday, so i have been comforting myself with tarot decks.

impulse-bought the soprafino after coveting it for years, bc it popped up at a discount on ebay. (the meneghello, of course, not the lo scarabeo, because i'm not a *plebe*)

The Soprafino Tarot folows the Tarot de Marseilles system really faithfully with not too many variants. The suit cards you see here are universal for all the Marseilles decks still through today. I love this two of pentacles! + love this Queen of Swords w/her disingenuous "who, me?" gesture.

Easy-to-access, affordable Soprafino tarot remake: Soprafino Dellarocca by Da Brigh #TarotSky #HistoricalTarot

Cons: keywords (I ignore) + the artist smoothed out the original engraved lines, causing some loss of detail

Pro: Exquisitely captures the shimmering nature of the original pastel shades!

These cards are all lovely examples of the Tarot de Marseilles system, only as you can see they are much more realistic images than the TdM, which is traditionally quite cartoonish. These colors are SO striking and beautiful. This is a 19th-c. deck fusing a contemporary art style w/medieval imagery.

The major difference between the tarot you're familiar with, which is the Rider-Waite-Smith, and the Tarot de Marseilles, is that the TdM has a standard pip pattern for all the numbered cards in the suits instead of individually illustrated images (which was all Pamela Coleman Smith's brainchild).

Look at these swashbuckling, dashing Cavalier cards (Knights)! The Perrin Tarot (c. 1880) republished by Alberto Peruzzo Editore, now OOP). A rare 19th-century Italian tarot inspired by the Soprafino tradition. The Queens are also exceptionally beautiful #TarotTuesday #TarotSky #HistoricalTarot

Edoardo Dotti's tarot from mid-19th-century Milan, republished by Laura Tuan/Editions de Vecchi. Dotti's tarots drew from the style of the earlier printer Gumppenberg's famous Soprafino tarot, but with the Habsburg eagle images removed, so as not to piss off Napoleon III #TarotSky #HistoricalTarot

I actually love the tarot de marseilles maaaaybe more than rider-waite decks. but they're slippery for me to read with because it's been decades since i was into numerology and i've never sat down to properly learn to read the TdM system. But I love them!

This ends our tarot haul post for today!

Also the engraved images on the cards are in fact very crisp and detailed--it is just that my mobile phone camera (and my abilities as a photographer) are rather poor, so my photos are always slightly blurry 🙄 I can't emphasise enough how **crucially influential** this deck was in tarot history!

A tarot by Edoardo Dotti (1865 in Milan), reprinted by Deviant Moon Inc. Edoardo's father, Teodoro, took over Ferdinando Gumppenberg's print shop. Dotti tarots thus are derived from the Soprafino. Scrumptious dark pink and mallard green and blue colours! #TarotSky #HistoricalTarot #TarotTuesday
