people need to understand that gerontocracy is a symptom of oligarchy — it's not "old people" having power in a collective sense, it's a system of *sortion* wherein elders either rise to be rich oppressors, or are left to languish in destitution (or pushed into an early death)

i would be a paying subscriber to a newsletter that did op-eds via sortion – pay a couple random people each week to read up on whatever is going on in the world and then have them compose a piece on it (you'd probably want people to assist them putting it together b/c most people dont write often)
Yes. This also fuels the tendency I have recently seen of projecting their own preferences on a fictional concept of "what normal every day people think" and they have become dangerously deluded about this confusion.

I fear that this depressing tendency of “representative” democracy to fail to provide effective representation, is a feature rather than a bug. David Van Reybrouck’s “Against Elections” quite good on the history of this. I’m on team sortion and communalism (Murray Bookchin), but unlikely to win!

Democratic Lotteries fortunately construct deliberative bodies that are competent. According to top academic journal Science Magazine (https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.aaw2694) (2019) [5],
“Deliberative experimentation has generated empirical research that refutes many of the more pessimistic claims about the citizenry’s ability to make sound judgments…. Ordinary people are capable of high-quality deliberation, especially when deliberative processes are well-arranged: when they include the provision of balanced information, expert testimony, and oversight by a facilitator."
Deliberation can overcome polarization, echo chambers, and extremism. Democratic deliberation promotes “considered judgment” and “counteracts populism”:
The communicative echo chambers that intensify cultural cognition, identity reaffirmation, and polarization do not operate in deliberative conditions, even in groups of like-minded partisans. There’s a movement in the UK to replace the House of Lords with a House of Citizens, selected by #sortion (a random sampling of the public) that replenishes regularly. Like a national jury ruling on the elected MP’s agendas and legislation. Sortition is the future of democracy.

I'd like to do a supermarket/dollar store/CVS this way. A 5000 SKU market that works like a Sonic: you didn't step inside, you drive up, pickers put it into sortion conveyors and it gets sorted to your window.

Imo if there’s a place for sortion of of a type, it’s in things like review and input panels for topics like electoral district drawing or other local-knowledge-and-attitude dependent topics.

I'd argue they built a bad system. The Senate is very undemocratic. Actual democracy is built on sortion, not popular elections, and certainly not elections where candidate selection is controlled by a wealthy elite. I don't even want to try to rebuild it.
