And like in fiction, low HP rarely matters. You can narrate it, but mechanically it's mostly *shrug* whatever.

You can add a bit more nuance. I rather like the SotWW HP variant where you initially add Damage, but once it reaches your Health, it then subtract additional damage from your Health

I can see the arguments for both options - but how about (say in SOTWW) instead of "roll luck at the end of each turn", if its a player power they've lost access to - they get a luck roll when they try to use it again. Cuts down on roll, but also leaves the randomness element.

Had a thought about Save-or-End effects, particular around DnD 4e but also in other games like SotWW.

Having to roll each round, especially for multiple effects and multiple foes can be a real pain in the arse

Could an attack roll (or similar) generate a number of rounds as part of its output?

Session 18 #TTRPG - #SotWW write-up

At more than one point they missed Falen's presence. But they have become powerful themselves.
They find themselves in a spacious cavern, lit by many different coloured lamps, the pool fed by an underground pipe and something of a market going on. There are many people there, including Nessa of the Pool and Candle Jack. Together; these strange exiles in the tunnels form the Lantern Court under the protection of Warden Mora Lanes. She greets the party, telling them they aren't the first to come this way, but passage of the Lantern Ways requires a toll, and there is the subtle hint of many crossbows reinforcing her authority to bar their passage. Tavin Lace has again entirely vanished, and our heroes are developing a grudging admiration for his ability to simply disappear when danger arises. In this case, the requested toll is the assistance of such puissant individuals in ridding them of the Lantern-Eater, a monster of shadow and darkness who has been terrorising her people. She provides them with a guide, Brigg Lanternkeeper and with Tavin now reappearing, they are guided swiftly through a confusing array of passages to a shadowy chamber amid the Catacombs, where they confront the terrifying apparition of claw and darkness, finally defeating it and sending the slashed ribbbons of shadow back into the darkness, but not before Aldex takes a serious Shadow-Claw wound. The Lantern Eater has been defeated - has it been destroyed? Who knows? But for now our heroes can return the cavern of hanging lanterns and be proud of their achievement. Winning the approval of the Lantern Court is no small matter if one wishes to travel the passages of the Undercity.

#TTRPG one of the ingenious methods used by the Thieves of the City of Asylum #SotWW

The "String Map"
The Thieves of the [[House of Fetch]] have developed an ingenious, easily concealed method of navigating underground tunnels, that has the added advantage of being usable in virtually no light, by means of a **String Map**. If you know where the big knotted end starts, you can feel each knot representing an intersection. the type of knot letting the 'reader' know which way to turn, one type of knot for left, one for right, and one for straight ahead. In large spaces such as caverns, the turns indicate which wall to follow, straight ahead to ignore openings. The final advantage of a **String Map** is that a couple of cuts with a sharp blade render it virtually useless for anyone else. Rumour has it, the Guild has an entire library of such maps available for their Master Thieves to use.

They make friends with the Lantern Court Warden, and defeat the Lantern Eater.

And I finally wrote up last weeks session. #TTRPG
Aja was called by Pyta Ypta to The Gilded Lily her sprawling den, a gambling establishment with her apartments upstairs. She asks them to help out one of her proteges, Tavin Lace who is sitting for his Guild of Thieves Masterpiece test, the final step to being granted the coveted title of Master Thief. They meet Tavin in The Crooked Cup where he explains he just needs some help with his task of stealing the Golden Mask of Aurelius from the Guild of the Usurers and placing it on the statue of the Beggar King in the Guild Square. He has a plan.. and knows a secret path underground that will take him to a cistern directly underneath the Hall of the Ancients (Usurers Guild) in the House of Coin, the headquarters of the Guild of the Usurers. He offers 200 silver for the assistance, plus his promise of a friend at senior levels in the Guild. The gang check out the Guild Hall, with Aldex remembering a tour of the Hall as a young boy - hall.jpg Cassius tries to scry and discovers that his magical abilities are being blocked - most likely by a rare and incredibly valuable mineral called Philondrax that in even tiny quantities, can interfere with magical vision. Giving up on some audacious smash and grab, probably involving red, white and blue palanquins racing through sewers, they decide to accompany Tavin Lace - and relying on his String Map they enter the network of tunnels, forgotten smugglers routes, catacombs, and old drains under the city. Negotiating their way through a series of old smugglers traps, they find themselves via the Lantern Ways in a spacious cavern, lit by many lamps.

That's the moral position, but critically its consistent with the fiction that inspired most of the genres we play in.

Specific one-off exceptions for narrative purposes? Sure, handled carefully. But default - no mind control.

Guess I better respec my SotWW Wizard PC then...

Philondrax - mined deep in the Dragon's Teeth Mountains. Incredibly valuable & rare. Even tiny quantities create a field akin to a negative magical aura. The effect negates scrying/viewing spells. #Handwavium #TTRPG #SotWW @thedicemechanic.bsky.social @antporter.bsky.social @xneardark.bsky.social

Yeah, that's why I panicked at the start of SotWW because it felt like history was going to repeat itself, so I was a bit more confident in asking you for clarification.

Funnily enough, romance did stay key to Elisandre's personal campaign and everyone seemed to be on board.

You went all in? Excellent! I intentionally never read the adventure in the starter set. I suspect the grimmer feel of Dragonbane may be closer to your sweetspot than the heroics of SotWW

We finally overcame the curse and got 1st 2026 #SotWW RPG last night.

@sensiblearchie.bsky.social gave us a nice urban dungeon, @sashette.bsky.social and @antporter.bsky.social killed rats, @xneardark.bsky.social brought the style, and my divination mage actually contributed to combat. Vaguely.
