For the record, I would prefer to live entirely without a car, but if I’ve gotta use one sometimes, I want it to be electric and fit a couple cellos, some merch and a soundperson.

Master electronic musician William Basinski played a scintillating set at the cavernous Knockdown Center last night. Then, when he was done, he had the soundperson crank Counting Crows' "Spaceman in Tulsa." The place cleared out in a trice.

I only remember making this happen a few times. Once at Olympia's Voyeur w/ Glass Goblins, once at Rain City Rock Camp w/ Trash Panda Go Kart. You need the right soundperson (or ideally none) & the right space & the right number of people etc...

Somehow Devo escaped the Congress Theater curse. They sounded.... completely wrong. The guitars were mixed louder than the synths which I feel has to be an indictment of the soundperson and not the room or the system. But they overcame it by being so good at Devo-ing.

It's gotten a lot better tbh, espcially if it's relatively full. Also sound has a lot to do with the band's soundperson than the venue. There's some decent metered parking on second Avenue between 4th and 3rd Strrets that I use when there is no event at Target Field or Target Center.

And finally, in two weeks, I will be playing this hilariously mismatched night at the Monkey House, where I will be playing a death industrial set opening for a solo indie power pop act and a venerable pre-Nirvana punk rock band from Olympia Washington. I expect the soundperson to be... unhappy.
