UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer vowed on Tuesday to "leave no stone unturned" to uncover failings in preventing the killings of three girls.

The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) has confirmed a data breach involving court files related to victims, survivors, and families of the Southport attack, which occurred on 29 July 2024. The breach, identified during a review of digital systems, involved unauthorized access by court staff to sensitive personal information for a limited number of individuals. The MoJ expressed being 'appalled' by the incident and issued an apology, stating that unauthorised access to court files is 'completely unacceptable.' The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has been notified, and there is no evidence that personal data was shared with third parties. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has instructed the Lord Chancellor to oversee the investigation. An MoJ source confirmed that the independent Data Protection Officer assessed the matter and determined that for a limited number of people, the accessed information included sensitive data likely to pose a high risk to their rights and freedoms. Affected individuals are being notified directly. The breach follows previous incidents involving inappropriate access to medical records of attack victims, including a case where nearly 50 staff at a Liverpool hospital trust inappropriately accessed records of victims treated at Aintree Hospital. The MoJ has also announced a review of staff conduct policies, acceptable use frameworks, and fraud response plans. HM Courts and Tribunals Service and HM Prison and Probation Service are conducting parallel investigations. The Southport attack, which took place at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class, resulted in the deaths of three children—Bebe King (6), Elsie Dot Stancombe (7), and Alice da Silva Aguiar (9)—and left ten others physically injured. The MoJ's statement emphasized the distress caused to victims, survivors, and their families, with a commitment to taking 'extremely firm action' against any wrongdoing. The department is working to prevent future breaches by strengthening data protection measures and ensuring staff compliance with security protocols.
