🎨 Things to preserve your finished art, that I have learned w time & experience:

Pencil, Pastel: Spectrafix (buy a continuous mister spray bottle for hair, use IT)
Watercolor: Dorland's Wax Medium
Gouache: Dorland's Wax Medium or Spectrafix
Acrylic, Oil: Gamblin Gamvar (Matte or Gloss)

Heyyyyy I did promise new work - even though this is from the sketchbook.

Been experimenting with just using gouache and watercolor and just layering them up in a very additive/subtractive way, fixing the layers with Spectrafix as I went.

Good point. I’ve used it indoors, but I wouldn’t recommend doing so. I’ve heard other artists suggest SpectraFix … it’s casein based and non-toxic. I haven’t tried it, but my curiosity is renewed!

with pastels added the 3rd is the image with pastels on the Kraft card. Mix of watercolors applied thickly and then neocolor2 and colored pencils and Inktense. Then finally soft pastels. I've been testing out SpectraFix fixative and so far I like it but it has a learning curve.

Ran an experiment to see if brands of soft pastels I have reacted differently to the Grumbacher fixative sprays I already have. I've concluded the color darkening & blend migration is too great for all of these & I'm going to buy some SpectraFix instead.

I'm really impressed with SpectraFix so far. It can be used indoors, doesn't smell bad, and works really well on paper & pastelboard backings. I was able to buy it locally @Blick_Art

Here is the original swatch, with a stripe of SpectraFix applied in the middle of the previously untouched area. Note the blended areas' consistency. The back is very telling: the Grumbacher formulas caused some colors to seep through. SF caused more buckling, but no seeping.

This piece was absolutely ruined by the Grumbacher fixative shortly after I posted it last time. I've gone over the ruined parts again with more pastels, adding a few elements. This time, it survived the SpectraFix:

Started on the giant pastel. First layer: getting pigment on paper with giant pastels and dipping a brush dipped in fixative made of milk casein and alcohol made by Spectrafix as a wash. The color shifting is far less than most fixatives. The big pastels are all Sennelier.
