You see, it's announcements like this that make me want to dive back into using a proper camera for photo and video rather than my phone. Canon has just announced the EOS R8 Mark II, a lightweight full-frame camera with up to 7.5 stop in-body image stabilisation. Bring on the handheld night shots! It's the follow-up to the original EOS R8, and it's built for people who want full-frame quality without a full-frame kit bag. At approximately 499g, it's still one of the lightest full-frame cameras Canon makes. Under the hood is a 24.2MP full-frame CMOS sensor paired with a DIGIC X processor. Canon says that combination is behind the camera's colour accuracy and dynamic range. There are some really cool Autofocus features on board as well. The EOS R8 Mark II gets "Register People Priority", which lets you register up to 10 faces on the camera and 100 on a memory card, and the camera will then recognise and focus on those specific people in a crowd. That tracking works down to EV -7.5, the same low-light rating as Canon's flagship EOS R1. Dual Pixel CMOS AF II adds deep learning subject detection for people, animals and vehicles. For fast-moving subjects, the camera shoots at 40fps with a buffer for up to 73 RAW files. Pre-continuous shooting in H+ mode captures roughly half a second before you fully press the shutter, adding up to 20 extra frames to help you nail a shot you'd otherwise miss. The EOS R8 Mark II is also the first Canon camera with Dual Pixel 3D imaging technology. It captures JPEGs with depth information, which you can then convert into 3D content using Canon's free Dual Pixel 3D Converter app for Windows. On the video front, 4K video is oversampled from 6K for extra detail, and Full HD tops out at 180fps for slow motion. Cinema View gives a 2.35:1 aspect ratio, and Canon Log 3 and Hybrid Log-Gamma profiles are on board for colour grading. Connectivity covers Wi-Fi (2.4GHz/5GHz) and Bluetooth 5.3, plus a USB-C port with up to 10Gbps transfer, charging and power delivery. There's also USB livestreaming and remote shooting through the Canon Camera Connect app. An optional EG-E2 Extension Grip adds a tripod socket and direct access to the battery, which is handy if you're shooting handheld for long stretches. Canon has also updated its Speedlite EL-5 wireless flash.
