#speleothem
New pronoun for us, fellow #trans #nonbinary people. You could be speleothey/speleothem.
If you, like me, are annoyed by typing stalactite and stalagmite (and the rarer stalagnate [a pillar]) every time you have a cave scene, you might be interested to know that there is a word that means all three (and more).

Unfortunately, that word is SPELEOTHEM.

I always knew in theory that a speleothem is a sedimentary rock, but I've never seen a cross-bedded stalactite before 😂

Excited to share our latest research published in @science.org #ScienceAdvances! 🎉
We've discovered the Laacher See eruption 🌋 in a speleothem from Germany, which allows to synchronize European and Greenland Late Glacial climate change.

Somewhat silly suggestion, but what if you could mix & match different Speleothem? (aka spikes)

They actually line up pretty perfectly, and although they don't necessarily mesh super well, I think there'd be some use cases.

This is a "dirty" speleothem: essentially a laminated siltstone, ~cemented with calcite. It probably grew close to a fair-sized cave entrance, allowing dust-sized particles (mineral and biological) to become entrained (Wilgarup Cave, Western Australia). Contains ca. 2000 pollen/gram calcite 🧪

New paper on interpreting speleothem 18O records from @paleopatt.bsky.social and @cavesandclimate.bsky.social. Much work still to be done on water isotope processes to improve our ability to reconstruct past climate. Grateful to be able to learn from them and add a small contribution along the way:

Which I can't use, because barely anyone knows what it means (including me, 30 mins ago). I especially can't put it in the mouth of a regular person.

You can, however, make a joke about a stalactite's pronouns being speleothey/speleothem.

But no-one will get it. 😕

Africa’s caves are timekeepers of climate and life. 🌍

An all-women research team, led by HERI’s Georgina Luti, has revealed how rock layers called speleothems record shifts in Africa’s past and help us date fossils more reliably.
