These guys are so weird and somewhat grotesque. I’ve had several at my front entryway. I heard that they are sphinx moth larvae and I love them, so this guy got relocated today. The others were moved, as well. I fed it some cilantro.

Hard to tell from the front, but looks like it could be a hawkmoth/sphinxmoth (Sphingidae)

I forgot to tag @fierygoddess.bsky.social since I know she also really likes cool nature findings. #moth #SphinxMoth
Also, I was informed by someone more knowledgeable that this is a Sphinx Moth, not a cicada. Oops.

One of my pupae didn’t come out but it was fully formed.
So, I decided to peel half the shell to preserve as a personal specimen! Had to glue the mouth part back on but I’m so excited to show it once it’s dry!

Ah. Update on this moth. It might have a punctured eye? Liquid leaking out of its head :( it’s mouth seems to have straightened out but not tucked back in fully.
Might be the result of pesticide poisoning as a caterpillar

The moths are dry! First time pinning this species and their eyes and abdomens deflated. Next time I wanna look more into how to stuff them. Fluffy moths are just harder to work with because of how easily their fluff flakes off like poorly done flocking

And the last of my hawk moths have passed. Now the net is free for my 400 worm babies once they’re big enough

One more moth down. Just one more to go.
The only surviving one is the male which makes sense. P sure females die faster the more they lay their eggs
