"When I make a piece, I’m satisfied with it. It feels like my child or something, especially when I first started making them and I wasn’t selling them. I was just making it because of the gift God gave me," Rolling Fork sculptor Lee Washington said.

My partner and I spent all summer restoring the original porch on my house. I found used spindles for the stairs, built new once’s to match on the railing, and restored a vintage screen door with real copper.

I love my new front door so much 😭

“Some that he made resembled my grandmother,” Barbara Washington said of her husband Lee's work. “She used to love to wear hats, and she didn’t think she was dressed up for church unless she had her hat on. So he got some little things and made hats and put them on little ladies going to church.”

“I just can’t throw something together you know. I like to feel good about it,” Rolling Fork sculptor Lee Washington said. “The only way I can feel good about it (is) I got to be feeling good before I even start.”

Everybody thinks it’s cool to live in a century home until it’s time to spend an hour and a half dusting your intricate staircase spindles every weekend.

We compared spindles across 25 eukaryotic species, from yeasts to plants and animals: Metaphase plate width scales with genome size to the 1/3 power. A vast range of genomes, handled by a small change in spindles. Surprisingly, chromatin amount counts, not chromosome number.

“I don’t put anything on paper; everything I put out comes from my head,” Sharkey County sculptor Lee Washington said. “I can be driving down the highway or sitting in bed and think of something to make. I got to be in that state of mind.”

"I (have) made one for President Obama," Rolling Fork sculptor Lee Washington said of his cotton-picker art. "It was a piece that looked like an angel had a hand on his shoulder, standing behind him.”

Yeah! My grandparents had this massive solid wood cabinet that had giant speaker on each end. If you lifted the center lid, there was an 8-track slot, a turntable, some faders and other control knobs, and there *might have been* some reel-to-reel spindles, but my memory is fuzzy.

The seasons may have changed, but nature hasn't gone into hiding. From fascinating fungi to late-season plants, there's still plenty to spot if you know where to look. 🍄🍂

"Twenty-five years ago, agricultural power and machinery teacher Lee Washington sat inside an empty classroom at South Delta High School in Rolling Fork, Mississippi, tinkering with some old cotton-picker spindles.

Got high last night and ordered a bunch of spinning fiber, an additional dorp spindle (my fingers just want to type it that way, that's what they are now. they're dorp spindles), and exactly ONE Schacht boat shuttle bobbin to compare sizes with the ones I got at the yard sale lol

The way that spindles work is that they basically just get events from repos when something happens, like a push or whatever. The spindle, if it's going to respond, eventually responds with what the results were, if any. If it looks like a spindle and quacks like a spindle, it's a spindle

A witch has dropped her hat here!

(Finally, after a very slow start, we are getting a few waxcaps, I’ve still not seen any corals or earth tongues, nor spindles or clubs - it’s such a weird year for fungi, and considering that’s almost certainly climate related that really is scary!)
