Soaking up the storm: Sponge cities and the future of flood-resilient Southeast Asia
The climate crisis is causing increased extreme weather events in Southeast Asia. Could “sponge cities,” a city planning method engineered by Chinese architect, Yu Kongjian, help them weather the storm?

Greening our cities and creating “sponge cities” not just good for flood prevention but also would benefit biodiversity, cleaner air and well being. It’s a clear win win.

An image showing three views of progression from bottom to top of a relatively impermeable / flood prone city with one stream and a small pond in a park. middle image with more wetlands / floodplains / water parks; Urban Wetlands make cities vibrant: they replenish groundwater, improve air quality, abate heat islands, increase biodiversity & habitat, filter & clean water, living labs for kids to learn where they are, and increase livelihoods from the complex water earth interface ; Top image: more wetlands, more scattered city centers. An in-city water park with masonry pathways through a diversity of aquatic species, plus grassy terraces for people to hang out. Apartment & office buildings in the background.
