Spotted lanternfly detected for first time in Canada, found in Windsor
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has confirmed the first detection of the invasive spotted lanternfly in Canada, specifically in Windsor. This insect, native to southeast Asia, has been known to cause significant damage to grapevines and other crops and trees. The Invasive Species Centre reported that the spotted lanternfly can feed on over 100 plant species and has the potential to cause widespread economic, ecological, and social impacts if allowed to spread unchecked. The insect was first detected in North America in Pennsylvania in 2014. Windsor residents had previously reported sightings, but this is the first official detection by an agency. The CFIA is urging Canadians to report any suspected sightings immediately, providing details such as location and photographs. Identification tips include recognizing the adult's distinctive features: approximately 25 mm long with light brown/grey front wings featuring black spots and dark speckled bands, and red rear wings with black spots and white bands. Nymphs are black with white spots in early stages and red with black and white spots in later stages. Egg masses appear as grey smears on trees and hard surfaces, resembling mud. The insect's sticky excrement, honeydew, can lead to sooty mold growth and attract bees and wasps. The Invasive Species Centre advises checking vehicles and outdoor items for egg masses when visiting infested areas, avoiding moving firewood, and purchasing locally sourced firewood. The CFIA will respond to reports with site surveys and insect collection if necessary. This detection marks a critical point for Canadian agriculture and forestry, as the spotted lanternfly poses a significant threat to the grape and wine industry, as well as other crop growers and horticulture sectors. The agency emphasizes the importance of early detection and reporting to prevent the pest from establishing a foothold in Canada.

Milkweed, the plant monarchs need to survive, may be lethal to invasive spotted lanternflies.

Michigan State and Penn State researchers saw mortality up to 90% within 24 hours in unpublished tests vs. grapevine.

This is a spotted lantern fly, an invasive species. Here's your reminder that if you're in the US and you see one of these, take a picture and kill. After you kill it, see if your state has a web page for reporting it. #SpottedLanternFly #pest #insects

There's a new #invasive in #NH. This is the first detection of #spottedlanternfly in the state (that wasn't on landscape material in a nursery). Primarily an agricultural pest but it also feeds on maples and can be an all around nuisance. Easy to catch with an empty water bottle, they jump right in.
