I have a FreshRoast SR800 on order from Sweet Maria's and just waiting for it to show up. I did take a quick look at the Skywalker, but that seemed overkill for just starting.

Those old SRs are amazing for the money. I’ve got an 89 SR800 I picked up in a hock shop for $300 that’s my main drop C bass.

So glad they haven’t gone up in price like crazy and are still a bargain to be had.

Scrolling past this I thought I was looking at a Soundgear, I have one sort of like the one below.

The lower part of the body does have more of a Spector shape to it though, I think you're spot on with that.
An Ibanez SR800 bass guitar. Like the Alembic in the original post, it has a standard double cut shape with rounded edges, but instead of soapbar pickups it has a reverse PJ configuration and four knobs. It's a translucent dark red color with a lighter brown fretboard.

That's a good way to learn. My first instrument was viola, starting when I was maybe 9 or 10 and I've also played clarinet, oboe, and English horn. I picked up the bass when I was 14 (I'm now 41) and it's the one that really stuck. Here's my low end collection:

From back to front, they are - Rickenbacker 4003W - Black Fender P Bass Special with a jazz profile neck and jazz bridge pickup and red tortoiseshell pickguard - Yamaha BB735A in "Dark Coffee Sunburst", the only 5 string of the bunch - Ibanez SR800 with natural amber finish on swamp ash - 1984 Peavey Fury, one of the first generation ones with the slanted Super Ferrite pickup like the T20s have. This one's as old as me!

Oh now I'm very interested. I put some Wilde (designed and made by Bill until his death, now made by his wife and daughter) bass guitar pickups in an Ibanez SR. The jazz pickup is in a standard housing but it's a stacked single coil so it works like a humbucker. They've got extra pole pieces too.

In any case it's a beautiful instrument. Sometimes those cheap ones end up being real special.

And I'm a sucker for single coils... I've got three basses, all P/J style (one has a stacked jazz at the bridge so kind of a humbucker) and a Telecaster. Single coil city at my house.

This is the Ibanez SR800 I modded, the stock pickups and preamp never sounded good so I put in some Wilde PJs and made it all passive with a series/parallel switch. I could have used a push/pull pot for that but I had an extra hole in the body, so I used a separate toggle.

I rounded up my three bass guitars for a photo, I have an older one but I've since made a couple of modifications to the Fender and the Ibanez.

Can you tell I like PJ basses?
