So grateful to be back out there with our fantastic research partners at the @whaleresearch.bsky.social for the first day of our collaborative Puget Sound field season! While our main goal is SRKW, today we had amazing weather and vocalizing Bigg's killer whales. We'll take it!

“The estuary is critical habitat for salmon and SRKW, southern resident killer whales, as confirmed by DFO and the environmental assessment of the project – which assessed that the new terminal would result in destruction of the legally protected Southern Resident Killer Whale’s critical habitat,”

Sorry. Sad news.💔 #SRKW J31 was seen carrying another deceased newborn calf off Vancouver Island. The cause is unknown, but every calf matters to this critically endangered population.
Protect their food. Reduce underwater noise. Give them a future. 🐋Read more:

Here are some more September Salish Sea stats:

— The T19s were our most commonly seen matriline for September (20 of the month’s 30 days)

— The largest group of Bigg’s was 32 whales (9/15 in the Strait of Juan de Fuca)

— While present, SRKW & NRKW numbers were lower than September 2025.
