OTD in 1974, as ballistic missile submarine USS James Madison (SSBN-627) departed its base in Holy Loch, Scotland, it collided with a Soviet attack submarine in shallow waters, leaving a 9-foot scrape on the Madison’s hull. The US Navy covered up the accident to avoid embarrassing the Royal Navy.

As the location of ballistic missile submarines is a top military secret, both US and USSR employed attack submarines to track their movements after they had left port; and, as they intended to sink them in the event of an emergency, there were also attack submarines that followed in their wake.

They will probably recycle ths SSBN names or states or just name it USS Ashley Babbit or some transgressive thing like Robert E Lee

It was overcast that day, but
@planet satellite photos show one SSBN at Faslane on 9 Oct and no visible SSBNs on 16 and 17 Oct.

5. Only the warhead table carries a verification date (22 Oct). SSBN, bomber and treaty rows have none. Fix: date every row, label positions "notional" on the marker, remove the blink from static states.

UK and France did a nuclear exercise last week.

The French did a SSBN test launch.

It’s just Russia doing a dick-measuring move.

The weak link are the ICBMs, which require less manpower to operationalize than bombers, and where the launch officers are of lower rank than the decision maker on an SSBN. The frightening part is that ICBMs are also the most destructive and least precise element of the nuclear triad.

My guess for the odd design is that it needs the extra surfaced stability from the ammas to elevate all the launchers simultaneously, especially if it's meant for giant carrier-killer missiles that would need something the size of an SSBN to fit vertically.

The state thing is wild, though. Right now a state could be an Ohio-class SSBN or SSGN, a Seawolf-class SSN, or a San Antonio-class LPD. Previously they were battleships and for a spell nuclear powered cruisers.

Just wild.

nuclear weapons numbers aren’t everything. That’s after all the basis of their SSBN fleets. There would be enough warheads to destroy all of Moscow and St Petersburg plus more besides if Russia attacked either nation. Russia must understand that if it ever took the option it’s going to get hit hard

I remember at the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, France deployed 3 of their 4 SSBN at the same time. Btw, America is also running a massive nuclear warfighting exercise drill called Global Thunder. NATO just finished one. Hope we are not experiencing another Able Archer moment.

But i honestly don't think the situation is that complicated! The USMC/USAF haven't had much trouble getting the issues heard high up. Hell, the Navy consistently does it for the SSBN/SIB. It's just the Navy is a bad advocate for the Navy when it comes to dealing with Congress.

The SSBN reminder is a nice thought, but Moscow already prices in French and British boats. What actually deters is the thing it cant game: a Baltic defense plan with real troop numbers and pre-positioned kit, so the nuclear bluff has nothing to cover.
