I say they aren’t stable because for all of that to work, the issuers of the stablecoin have to have a robust, audited reserve of dollars to pay out when a claim comes in and the GOP blocked all our amendments to require audits and hold reserves in insured accounts. BUT…

We urgently need strong regulatory oversight of stablecoins. The GENIUS Act lacks fundamental provisions to preserve financial stability and would increase systemic risk stemming from stablecoin runs and inadequate guardrails on foreign issuers.

Random thought: Stablecoin issuers, who make money on the short-term interest rate on reserves, will have a big incentive to lobby for actions that would lead to higher interest rates.
Sort of a freakonomics thing. Like doctors groups who really don’t lobby hard for dui laws.
