A friend and I placed an order back at Stag O Lee in June to save on shipping costs. Three months and a string of summer holidays later, it's finally here. Johnny Cash said, "Get a Rhythm." My rhythm? Rhythm & Blues. #vinyl #nowplaying #nowspinning #skymusic #homeoffice #stagolee

It took me about 15 months to type the history of the R&B charts into a spreadsheet so that I could organize by the date the song entered the charts.

A compilation with some exotica and rhythm & blues to get me through the afternoon—hopefully it’ll also chase away this sickly feeling. #vinyl #nowplaying #nowspinning #stagolee #dustyballroom #homeoffice #sick

“‘Stagolee’ and ‘Ollie Jackson’ were ballads of Black men who had shot down rivals for seemingly trivial reasons in the same man’s saloon within six years of each other. The two characters were, in a sense, vying to occupy the same folkloric space... there wasn’t room enough for both of them.”

of all the different ways I have seen Stagolee/Stagger Lee/Stag-a-lee/etc. spelled, my favourite is still Starkerlee, because it's adjacent to "starkers", English's funniest word for naked

Stagger Lee (or Stagolee, Stack-a-Lee, Stackolee, etc) is an old blues murder ballad that had been covered and rewritten a million times
Lloyd Price’s version is probably the definitive one, but i really like the Nick Cave version, and the Samuel L. Jackson version from Black Snake Moan

OJ is also the least Stagolee of any Stagolee. I mentioned him cause he's the only one in living memory, but his celebrity really sets him apart from the low class criminals that have historically been Stagolees and the "fuck the system" element is completely separate from the crime.

Luigi is what happens when the Stagolee myth is done by a Tom Joad. There's that sequence early in Grapes of Wrath when Joad is hitchiking and the driver tells him how he can't shoot the bank. Its true, United Health was not murdered with Brian Thompson, but Luigi got as close as an individual can.

Stagolee was a bad man
Now, they goes down in a coal mine one night
To rob the coal mine
There's gambling down there…

Then Billy Lion started screamin
I heard him say Stagolee don't take my life
You know I got two little children
& a poor little old sickly wife
Stagolee told Billy
Yeah I know you got a cute little boy & girl
If you want to see your family billy
You'll have to meet 'em in another world
