We have made a ton of costly tradeoffs to support our heavy use of light wood. In codes: sprinklers, second stairs, standpipes, alarms, monitoring contracts, fire-rated shaft requirements for refrigerants. They aren’t explicitly tied to light wood frame construction, but historically they follow it.

Compared to other places in the US, the NYC building code is good at resisting fire service overreach (in sprinklers, standpipes, stairways, shaft pressurization, etc.). But somehow we let ourselves get totally rolled by FDNY on solar panels. And battery storage is totally illegal. Not sure why.
Trying to put rooftop solar up in NYC a good way to get abundance-pilled. In Australia you call the solar installer and they put it up in less than week.

i am currently trying to get steel wool, caulk, and a width of chicken wire to at least keep these little motherfuckers from climbing in through affordances in standpipes and affordances for sewage lines. this shit is a nightmare and has lasted months. help

Building codes in NYC are the most unique in the U.S. NYC is more willing to stand up to the fire protection industry (taller single-stair, fewer standpipes/sprinklers, less elevator hoistway protection) but more cowed by labor (plumbing/electrical materials, crane/HVAC certifications)

It does get more challenging the taller you go, because your fixed costs per-block rise even if you allow a single-stair…elevators, standpipes, generators, fire alarm panels, etc. But that’s why it’s the Center for Building in North America, not the Center for Single-Stair. I’ll get there!
