Corporations such as Amazon or Tönnies profit from the over-exploitation of migrant workers. Low wages, excessive working hours, a high number of accidents at work, extremely unhealthy working conditions and fixed-term contracts characterize the precarious employment conditions in these industries. The high fluctuation in the companies and the insecure living conditions of the workers due to temporary employment mean that unionization or the establishment of works councils is extremely difficult. Nevertheless, there have been labor disputes by migrants in recent years, including in the meat industry and at Amazon. Employees at Amazon have been fighting for a collective agreement since 2013, and there are works councils at several locations. In November 2020, employees at the Danish Crown meat company spontaneously stopped work collectively and successfully asserted their demands for permanent employment with a “wildcat” strike. We have invited labor sociologist Peter Birke to talk to us about the working conditions of migrant workers in the mail order and meat industries. We also want to discuss the possibilities of labor struggles of migrant workers in these sectors as well as solidarity-based joint associations of workers. Peter Birke has written the book “Borders of Glass” and researches the topics of racism, migration and labor struggles.

Konzerne wie Amazon oder Tönnies profitieren von der Überausbeutung migrantischer Arbeiter*innen. Niedrige Löhne, überlange Arbeitszeiten, eine hohe Anzahl an Arbeitsunfällen, stark gesundheitsschädliche Arbeitsbedingungen und befristete Verträge kennzeichnen die prekären Beschäftigungsverhältnisse in diesen Branchen. Die hohe Fluktuation in den Betrieben und die unsicheren Lebensbedingungen der Arbeiter*innen aufgrund von befristetem Aufenthalt führen dazu, dass eine gewerkschaftliche Organisierung oder der Aufbau von Betriebsräten extrem schwierig sind. Dennoch gab es in den letzten Jahren Arbeitskämpfe von Migrant*innen unter anderem in der Fleischindustrie und bei Amazon. Bereits seit 2013 kämpfen die Beschäftigten bei Amazon für einen Tarifvertrag, an mehreren Standorten gibt es Betriebsräte. Beschäftigte beim Fleischkonzern Danish Crown haben im November 2020 kollektiv spontan ihre Arbeit niedergelegt und mit dem „wilden“ Streik erfolgreich ihre Forderungen nach Festanstellung durchgesetzt. Wir haben den Arbeitssoziologen Peter Birke eingeladen, um mit ihm über die Arbeitsbedingungen migrantischer Beschäftigter im Versandhandel und in der Fleischindustrie zu sprechen. Außerdem wollen wir über die Möglichkeiten von Arbeitskämpfen von migrantischen Arbeiter*innen in diesen Bereichen sowie solidarischer gemeinsamer Zusammenschlüsse von Arbeiter*innen diskutieren.
