Stanthorpe rural generalist Dr Dan Manahan has been recognised with the 2026 ACRRM-RDAA Peter Graham ‘Cohuna’ Award for more than three decades of service to rural and remote medicine. The award, the highest honour jointly conferred by the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine and the Rural Doctors Association of Australia, acknowledges his contribution to healthcare, medical education and rural workforce development. Dr Manahan moved to Stanthorpe with his wife, Jacinta, in 1996 and has since provided a broad range of medical services across the Darling Downs, including emergency care, obstetrics, anaesthetics, palliative care and general practice. He has also held senior clinical leadership positions and worked with Aboriginal Medical Services and outreach clinics in Queensland and northern New South Wales, as well as undertaking remote locum work in communities including Doomadgee, Mornington Island, Cooktown and Weipa. A major part of his career has involved training the next generation of rural doctors. He has taught and supervised hundreds of medical students and junior doctors, contributed to medical curricula and helped establish Queensland’s Rural Generalist Pathway, launched in 2007. His work has helped create clearer and more sustainable career pathways for doctors considering rural practice. Since 2016, Dr Manahan has also volunteered with Rocketship Pacific, supporting medical education and training in Pacific Island nations. His contribution extends beyond medicine through involvement in local sporting clubs, schools, committees and community organisations. In accepting the award, Dr Manahan described rural medicine as deeply rewarding and credited his family, colleagues and the rural communities that shaped his career. His recognition highlights the important role experienced rural generalists play in providing comprehensive healthcare while mentoring future medical professionals.
