Huernia zebrina, the 'Lifesaver Plant,' is a fairly common Stapeliad with carrion flowers but they usually don't stink like other Stapeliads. Very chill/easy grower.

flashing back on my childhood, when my parents grew forty different kinds of stapeliads

and my mother's nursing baccalaureate colleague from Botswana visited and saw them and turned to my mOm with her eyes on stalks and said WHY ARE YOU GROWING WEEDS ??? ( weeds cause the cattle can't eat them)

We call these Stapeliads. I've heard all sorts of names attached to it, like corpse flowers.

So many different Stapeliads! Are they still called Stapelia? They seem to have changed genus name often. Beautiful.

Yeah, I once lost the larger part of my collection due to the "can take a bit of frost" thingie. Turned out -15°C is too much for stuff like aloes, mesembs and stapeliads, even if kept completely dry. But most agaves and prickly pear cacti even survive those conditions.

Stapeliads, I love them so. I used to bring the neighbour kids around to gape at them when they bloomed in purple, hairy, five petalled bread plate sized blossoms like an alien critter, stank like roadkill and had SWARMS of flies on them.

I mean I love stapeliads they are SUCH an Addams Family thing to grow and seeing one covered with flies in the hot sun (flies are their pollinators so they stink like dead meat) is one of my precious memories

Stapeliads are known for their malodorous blooms that smell of decaying meat or feces to attract flies as their pollinators. Pendurata has a light fecal scent, but is more of a damp musty smell like an old sponge.
