Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply. Tags: One Shot, Cross-Posted on FanFiction.Net, Cross- Posted on Tumblr, Friendship/Love, Slight Neku/Shiki but like...very light amount, takes place in the DS version of the universe, specifically DS version of battle mechanics.] A screenshot showing an excerpt of the fanfiction linked in the post. The text reads as follows: ["Neku, watch out!" he felt something crash into him. He spun onto the hard ground, grazing his elbow. Crap! He saw stars. No, not stars. Static. He shook his head out of a daze and rose to his feet. A pack of Garage Wolves prowled about at the foot of a parked truck. It was likely one of them that had knocked him down. He had been careless. Neku's lip curled into a sneer. Compared to the reapers and powerful, bigger noise that had been stalkng them left and right today, these noise were small fry at best. "You up for this?" he called to his invisible partner. Shiki's voice answered from the other spatial zone she was hidden in. "This'll be over in a cinch. After all," he could almost imagine her leaning into a battle stance. "Losing's not an option. Hyah!"]

The text reads as follows: [He squinted into the gloom, trying to ignore the strange sounds clicking and whirring all around. He knew the sound fairly well, having once taken apart a clock as a kid in a fit of boredom. However, it was more than that. Somehow, that sound - it was vaguely familiar, just at the edges of his consciousness. The grinding metal gears in bronze, silver and gold. A familiar clang of bells. The faintest feeling of a memory. His head felt heavy. He grasped it in his hands, his black hair falling into his eyes. That sound! Make it stop! The bells were no longer in his memory. They surrounded him. They reverberated through his head. The sound bashed through his skull. Bang! Clang! Bang! Clang! Ding! Dong! Each clash of metal drilled into his head and into his mind. Thoughts, images, phrases, people, laughter, tears, memories. It poured into him until he could take it no more, and as it kept coursing through his mind, he remembered. These weren't new memories. These were old ones, very, very old. They were his memories, no doubt about that, but they weren't from this time. They were from another time, and the time before that, and even beyond that.]

Rarely, it's in the sinister laboratory under the school...if he manages to get that far. And then there are the times when he doesn't even make it to eighteen years, where he throws his own life away. Where she's forced to watch as he gives up on the world and everything in it, unable to turn her eyes away from the horrifying sight. And usually, it's all her fault. Those are the times she hates the most.]

Rapunzel's delighted giggles echo through the room as she runs around, chasing alarmed lizards about the place. Mother is busy, too busy to mind her (as always), and as young children are wont to do, they will find something to occupy themselves with. She is no different. She leaps forward and catches one. This one is the stranger of the bunch, it changes colour and she knows that ordinary lizards don't do that, right? It squirms in surprise before shooting out of her palm and scrambling away towards the window sill, almost knocking over a lit candle in the process. She pouts. She just wanted to make friends! It didn't have to run away like that.]

She pulled away as the Despised One found his footing. Even so, she stood close, as if waiting to catch him in case he stumbled. Líf let out a huff of something that might have once been laughter. Both at her words, and the sight. "You really don't change, do you, Kiran?" he murmured. The False Summoner froze. Uncertainty flickered in her expression. For a second, he wondered if she knew - if she had realized - if he had given himself away. Was it the tone? Was it his expression? Had he allowed the part of himself that no longer existed to slip through - "How...do you know my name?"]
